We don’t have the same budgets as our massive competitors, nor do we have the army of marketers that they can employ.
So how can a small- or medium-sized business, against overwhelming odds, carve out its piece of the market?

Ensure that your website is accessible and comfortably viewable across a range of devices, including smaller smartphones.

Special measures should be taken to avoid duplicate content, but this is a great way to drive new customers to your site.
Facebook is a great promotion tool whether you’re in the B2B or B2C industry.
But did you know you can set up remarketing audiences on Facebook?
By installing a Facebook tracking pixel on your site you can continue to market to customers who have visited your site.
This is a great way to create return traffic to your business blog or website.
And you can start remarketing to audiences as small as 100 visitors.
Facebook email custom audiences
Staying with Facebook, you can also give that email list of yours a second life.
Instead of just using it to blast emails to your customers once in a while,
You can upload that list into Facebook and capture the social accounts of anyone that has their email address attached to it.
This is a HUGE benefit since it will allow you to market to those users on their mobile devices.
Start a Facebook group that drives traffic to your site
Start a niche-specific group where members can ask questions and get support.
And don’t forget to point them back to your site’s content where relevant.

I myself write for about a dozen major media sites, and while it may not result in immediate customers, the benefits are definitely felt throughout the organization.
And our referral traffic from these sites is a huge boon.
To become a contributor you need to start small and work your way up.
Also, you need to hone your craft when it comes to writing.
To do this you need to be writing every single day.
The more you write, the better you’ll have come and the better your chances will be at becoming a contributor.
It’s not enough to produce great content and hope that people find it – you have to be proactive.
One of the best ways to increase traffic to your website is to use social media channels to promote your content.
Twitter is ideal for short, snappy (and tempting) links, whereas Google+ promotion can help your site show up in personalized search results and seems especially effective in B2B niches.
If you’re a B2C product company, you might find great traction with image-heavy social sites like Pinterest and Instagram.
Twitter remarketing works in almost the exact same way as Facebook remarketing.
Simply install the pixel and you can now target your site’s visitors on Twitter.
The main difference is that Twitter will require a higher minimum audience count before you can start advertising towards them, 500 people to be exact.
Twitter custom audiences
Just like Facebook, you can target Twitter users on their mobile devices by uploading their emails to Twitter.
However, if you cannot get at least 500 users into your custom audience through an email upload, then you won’t have the required minimum to advertise towards them.
Twitter Cards is a great tool to drive traffic to your site.
They are larger tweets that incorporate images and allow you to have buttons built into the tweet.
They allow you to have engaging calls to action, attractive images right in the stream, and you can even give them special functionality like having downloads attached directly to the tweet.
Tweets with images get 18 percent more clicks than its text counterparts, so make sure you’re using Twitter Cards.
Optimize your existing posts
Comb through your old posts to make sure they have unique and relevant title tags, URLs and meta descriptions.
While Google site links are automatically generated, you can demote URLs you don’t want to show; this may increase the chances that the URLS you do want listed show up.
You can do this from within Google Webmaster Tools.
Arrange an advertising swap
Trade banner ads with a complimentary site in your niche.
Post more frequently
Find your magic number and commit to seeing it through.
Remember that in many cases, the traffic increases you see from blogging are scalable.
Submit your posts to Reddit
Yes, this also still works.
Mention influencers in your tweets
When you cite, quote or mention someone in a blog post,
Be sure to @ mention them in your tweet when you promote your post.
Focus your energy on strategies that are working
You don’t have to do what everyone else is doing.
Study your analytics to see your main traffic drivers, and focus on your energy on these areas.
Build connections with others in your niche
I know this sounds cliché, but building personal relationships with other bloggers in your niche will often result in organic inbound links and referral traffic to your site.
Make sure you have every relevant keyword you can think of on your site
I’m not talking old-school keyword spamming here.
I’m talking about focusing on topical content; and making sure you at least have the chance of being found for all your relevant keywords, no matter how obscure they may be.
Create a top 10 website post
Select the top 10 blogs in your niche, and write a post about them.
You may also want to create a simple badge or banner those sites can embed to show off their award.
Create a quiz
Quizzes are fun pieces of content that work really well at driving engagement with your visitors.
Plus, they’re a cinch to promote on social media using the techniques presented earlier in this article.
Sites like Quizzr allow you to create free quizzes to then post on your blog and drive traffic to your site.
Be sure to include links back to your site in your About page, in your photo descriptions, in the comments of your posts (where relevant), and in your milestones.
Get on YouTube
YouTube drives the most engaged traffic out of all social media sites, with an average of 2.99 pages per visit.
Add text to your blog post images
Try including your post title and URL in your blog post images for optimal effect when pinned or shared.
Host a webinar or webcast
Regardless of your industry,
I can guarantee there’s a topic you have enough expertise on that your customers would come to listen to you speak.
The trick is to identify this topic and then to create a fun and engaging presentation.
Post Content to LinkedIn
LinkedIn has become much more than a means of finding another job.
The world’s largest professional social network is now a valuable publishing platform in its own right, which means you should be posting content to LinkedIn on a regular basis.
Doing so can boost traffic to your site, as well as increase your profile within your industry – especially if you have a moderate to large following.
Become a member of industry Facebook and LinkedIn groups
Offer valuable advice and info to build relationships and drive traffic to your site.
Connect with bloggers who are already sending you traffic
If someone has already linked to your site, they obviously like what you have to say.
Contact them to see if there are other ways they could help promote your content (and vice versa).
Implement Schema Microdata
Implementing schema (or another microdata format) won’t necessarily increase traffic to your website on its own,
But it will make it easier for search engine bots to find and index your pages.
Another benefit of using schema for SEO is that it can result in better rich site snippets, which can improve click-through rates.
Ask a well-known blogger to guest post on your site
They’ll likely share the post with their audience, driving traffic to your site.
Respond to blog comments
Respond thoughtfully to all comments on your blog.
This is great for building relationships, as well as for driving commenters back to your site.
Add your blog to Alltop
As an aggregate for all kinds of web content, submitting your blog increases your chances of getting found by people looking for content in your niche.
Write a Response Post
Respond to a controversial post in your niche and then let the original poster know about it.
Chances are good they won’t be able to resist responding to it on their blog.
Contact influential bloggers
When you write a groundbreaking or newsworthy post, notify influencers in your field.
You may be surprised at how many link back to your post.
Make proper use of categories
If you haven’t already organized your content into relevant categories, now’s the time.
Categories are great not only for SEO but for helping your readers find relevant content.
Write landmark posts
Create at least a few long-form, authoritative posts that will organically garner links and attention over the long haul.
Comment on industry blogs
Become a regular commenter on a popular blog in your niche to help drive referral traffic and to establish relationships with other bloggers.
Interview influencers in your niche
They will be very likely to promote the interview to their audience.
Post a short excerpt from your posts to entice them to click through.
Meet other bloggers and share each other’s content.

It may have been that the costs were too prohibitive or that it seemed too daunting, but there’s help with that.

When you first start off, it will seem like you’re talking into a black hole and no one is listening to you.
But if you stay persistent and promote your podcast on social media, your audience will grow and your future episodes will gain more and more listeners.
Another great trick to getting a boost in your podcast audience is to invite a guest that has a large social following and asking them to help you promote it.
You’d be surprised who would say yes to joining your podcast if you only ask them.
Find partners in your industry
There are usually dozens of partnership opportunities for any business out there. The trick is to find those partners and establish a working relationship.
To give an example of this, we signed up as a partner for Unbounce.
They’re a landing page creation software that helps companies optimize their marketing campaigns.
It was free to sign up as a partner and they then featured us in their partner section and allowed us to do a little write up on our firm.
Before you knew it we were getting leads from their site and it’s been a great source of traffic for us.
This one is so obvious, we’re going to look at it first.
Paid search, social media advertising, and display advertising are all excellent ways of attracting visitors, building your brand and getting your site in front of people.
Adjust your paid strategies to suit your goals – do you just want more traffic, or are you looking to increase conversions, too?
Each paid channel has its pros and cons, so think carefully about your objectives before you reach for your credit card.
If you’re hoping that more traffic to your site will also result in more sales, you’ll need to target high commercial intent keywords as part of your paid search strategies.
Yes, competition for these search terms can be fierce (and expensive), but the payoffs can be worth it.
Foster a Sense of Community
People want to speak their minds and weigh in on subjects they feel passionately about, so building a community into your site is a great way to start a conversation and increase traffic to your website.
Implement a robust commenting system through third-party solutions such as Facebook comments or Disqus, or create a dedicated forum where visitors can ask questions.
Don’t forget to manage your community to ensure that minimum standards of decorum are met, however.
Make Yourself Heard in Comment Sections
You probably visit at least a few sites that are relevant to your business on a regular basis, so why not join the conversation?
Commenting doesn’t necessarily provide an immediate boost to referral traffic right away, but making a name for yourself by providing insightful, thought-provoking comments on industry blogs and sites is a great way to get your name out there – which can subsequently result in driving more traffic to your own site.
Just remember that, as with guest posting, quality and relevance are key – you should be engaging with other people in your niche, not dropping spam links on unrelated websites.
Examine Your Analytics Data
Google Analytics is an invaluable source of data on just about every conceivable aspect of your site, from your most popular pages to visitor demographics.
Keep a close eye on your Analytics data, and use this information to inform your promotional and content strategies.
Pay attention to what posts and pages are proving the most popular.
